Kitchen Design

Kitchen Design

Kitchens are one of my favorite spots in the house to renovate because they are the heart of a house.  Pictured above is a kitchen renovation that I did in Great Falls, VA. Custom cabinetry is a key feature in maximizing the storage in a kitchen.  They are customized to fit precisely in the room which doesn’t occur with standard cabinetry; plus, they last longer and retain their value.  For this project, we chose a gorgeous marble to accent the custom kitchen island and a neutral color palette to complement it.  The final touches included all new stainless steel kitchen appliances, hardware, and accent lighting.

Bathroom Renovation & Remodeling

Bathroom Renovation & Remodeling

I am excited to share this bathroom with you because it is the bathroom of MY dreams… welcome to my master bathroom.  When designing my bathroom, I wanted to create a space that felt bright, open, and, most importantly, clean. Therefore, I decided to opt for a simplistic and neutral color scheme, which would also help me create a sense of luxury in my bathroom. To kickstart this color scheme and design, I opted for patterned marble flooring from Marble Systems. Here, the mix of grey and white is nicely complemented by a snow-white border and marble baseboard – giving the space a distinctive, luxury feel. Since I chose statement flooring, I went for simple walls.  I designed my own custom vanity so that I could have the exact storage space that I needed and my shower giving it a rainfall showerhead, a main showerhead, and another handheld unit.  The last must-have for me was a large tub… what’s the use in your dream bathroom without a large tub to relax and enjoy it in?!

Upholstered Custom Made Bed

Most people spend around a third of the day in bed: sleeping, watching TV, reading, etc. So why not have a bed built for royalty? When you create a custom-made bed, the possibilities are endless; you are able to choose the shape, upholstery, and finishing details.  Plus, they are one-of-a-kind pieces that can be designed to meet precise specifications and squeeze into tight spaces, such as between windows.

Steps in Choosing a Custom Made Bed

Headboard Style

If you are wanting to add several pillows to your bed and design around the room, you may opt for a simple sleek panel. On the contrary, choosing a wingback design can give the bed dimension, generating a focal point to the bedroom.

Headboard Shape

A rectangular headboard provides clean lines and a clean palette; this shape can maintain serenity in the room.  Due to its neutral stance, it provides the flexibility to change out bedding, pillows, and decor.  Still a simple design but giving the bed an enhancement is slightly arching the top of the headboard.  To undoubtedly make your bed the centerpiece of the bedroom, choose a custom shape… think fleur de lis; it definitely does not have to be that extravagant to draw the attention of the room, a few curves are enough to satisfy.

Headboard Height

  • Low Profile: 36-48″ H
  • Average: 48- 60″ H
  • Above Average: 60-72″ H
  • Tall: 72- 80″ H
  • Oversize: 81″-120″ H

Headboard Only vs. Custom Bed Frame

There is the option of attaching your custom-made headboard to an ordinary bed frame and electing to have a bed skirt cover the box spring.  Or there is the choice of a custom-made bed frame. These are designed to match the headboard and can be built to support your mattress (platform), mattress, and box spring (standard), or to cover them (adjustable mattress foundation).  To give the bed a more complete look, a matching footboard can be added.  These sit up slightly higher than the mattress and excel in keeping comforters on the bed.

Custom Made Bed Finishing Touches

The exciting part is choosing the upholstery!  Will it be velvet, leather, or natural fabric?  Then there is the color, are you going to go with a neutral color or a vibrant color or pattern to really make a statement?  You can have the fabric pulled smooth and tight across the bed or there is the option of adding tufts.  I think that the icing on the cake is the addition of nailheads and usually choose the same metal finish that is used throughout the room.

My Custom Made Bed Projects

Custom Made Upholstered Beds

This bed was upholstered in a gray velvet by Kravet.  As you can see, my upholsterer made the base of the bed the exact size of the box spring and mattress and it flows seamlessly with the headboard.  There is a slight arch to the headboard to conform to the classy appearance of the bedroom.

Custom Made Upholstered Beds

We kept the style of this custom bed simple and chose an eye-catching fabric to make it the focal point of the bedroom.  The finishing touch of the nailhead trim perfected this chic design.

We are able to make beds per our customers’ requests so we have the ability to set the desired ambiance in any bedroom.  My team and I make our masterpieces to last a lifetime so that a third of your life is spent in the bed of your dreams!

Small Change, Big Impact: Recessed Lighting Installation

I recently had the pleasure of working with a family in Great Falls to make some key changes to their home. When it came to their teenage daughter’s room, we weren’t planning on doing too much – often allowing teenagers to control and decorate their own room can be a great form of their self-expression, and great for their mental health. But when I looked around her room, I knew one key change would have a major impact. She needed a lot more light! Keep reading to find out why and how we installed recessed lighting into this teenage girl’s room.

The Need

The light in a room is crucially important – it completely sets the mood and atmosphere. Additionally, there’s a major practical element that comes with lighting. For instance, in her room, there was no lighting installed, just a large window. And while this window may have been able to let in an appropriate amount of light, it was entirely shaded by a crape myrtle. Even if it didn’t, I still think she still would’ve needed ceiling light – for instance in the wintertime when the sun sets before she’s had time to do her homework at her desk. It was clear that she wanted a bit more light as well, with the way she had set her room up. There was a floor lamp and string lighting along the ceiling. While that lighting may have been nice right before bed, it wasn’t nearly enough light, and areas like her desk were left in the shade.

Installing something like ceiling lighting takes trained contractors and is likely beyond the breadth of a DIY home decor video on youtube. That’s where my team and I came in. We decided to go for recessed lighting, rather than say a hanging ceiling light, for a few reasons. The first is that the ceilings of this bedroom were not particularly high. Therefore, anything that was hanging or coming out from the ceiling would make the entire room feel shorter all together. Additionally, because of the size of the room, and especially where her desk was, I wanted to make sure that a good amount of light reached all corners of the room. Just one central light wouldn’t do that to the same effect as something like recessed light. Recessed lights are installed into the ceiling and lay flush against it. You almost always install more than one light, which gives you easy control over where in the room they’re placed. Because of this, I knew that installing recessed lighting was the way to go. My team and I got to work.

Let There Be Light

We decided to install four lights, approximately 25” from each corner of the room. This was going to bring symmetry and ensure the entire room had even lighting. The lights needed to be big enough to provide enough light for the room, but if they were too big, they would easily become an eyesore. 6 inches seemed to be a perfect size.

The actual process of installing the recessed lighting involved making cuts into the ceiling where the lights would be installed – it’s really important that these cuts are perfectly placed and the perfect size for the light, which is why we’d always suggest getting a professional in rather than attempting to do this yourself. Once the holes were ready, my contractor wired the electric through and installed the lights. We used LED bulbs which last much longer and use less energy – better for the environment.

Out of Darkness

The finished result almost seems like a different room. Not only does this new lighting mean she won’t have to spend her mornings and evenings in the dark, but her desk will be well lit for her to use. Additionally, the extra light allows you to better see the wall art and decor, giving you an insight into who this bright young lady is. I’m really happy with the final results. But of course, the most important thing is that my clients were also really happy with the final results.
