Transitional Lighting

Transitional lighting, not quite traditional, not quite modern, gives us the best of both worlds! It creates a simple yet sophisticated appearance by selecting features from these two contrasting styles which is extremely versatile. The feel is comfortable and fresh due to the mixing of straight lines and sleekness from the contemporary style with the warmth and roundness of the traditional style.  For example, the fixture could feature a drum with clean edges and a simple base but have a warm finish and soft texture or it could have a modern base that evolves into an ornate shade.

Transitional lighting has a set of common characteristics. Fixtures have uncomplicated lines, few ornate details, and occasionally have fabric shades.  The finishes are monochromatic but differ between warm traditional tones or cool contemporary.

Painted wood transitional lighting hanging over a dining table in the center of a Dining Room in Great Falls, VA.  You can see the simplicity in the design: clean lines, slight curves, and a warm tone.

Installing a transitional lantern in an entrance hall.  Again, there is simplicity in the design with clean edges and a monochromatic finish.

If you are torn by which type of lighting to choose, you can’t go wrong with transitional.  It will give the room a bright new ambiance that will complement the design that is already present.

Custom Slipcovers

Custom slipcovers can change the appearance of any room immediately without the cost of reupholstery. I have helped numerous clients over the years reinvent their living spaces by custom making slipcovers. Some clients opt to have a couple of sets so that they can change them for every season.

This particular client chose new white matelasse slipcovers. These are very clean looking. It is difficult to decipher if they are even slipcovers; they look almost like they have been completely upholstered!

Slipcover Tips:

  • Choose textured fabrics to add visual interest. Textured fabrics, such as denim, twill, and sailcloth, are more wrinkle-resistant.
  • Do not choose a slipcover fabric that is too heavy, this will make the seams too bulky.
  • Choose a tightly woven slipcover fabric, this will further protect the upholstery underneath.
  • Slipcovers work best on fully-upholstered furniture.  Slipcovers are best for fully-upholstered furniture.
  • Slipcovers should change the look, but not the comfort of the furniture.
  • Dry clean slipcovers to prolong their life.

Slipcover Benefits:

  • More affordable than reupholstering or purchasing a new piece of furniture.
  • Easy to remove and clean.
  • Can create a relaxed or fitted look.
  • Keeps furniture looking new.
  • Aids in blending mismatched furniture.
  • Can easily change the look of your home.
  • Protects furniture from damage and spills.

A wonderful way to change the fabric of your furniture without the cost of having the items reupholstered is to let us make slipcovers! My team and I can help you pick out the perfect fabric. Also, we will pick up your sofa or chairs to ensure a custom fit and that the process goes effortlessly for you and your household.

Kitchen Design

Kitchen Design

Kitchens are one of my favorite spots in the house to renovate because they are the heart of a house.  Pictured above is a kitchen renovation that I did in Great Falls, VA. Custom cabinetry is a key feature in maximizing the storage in a kitchen.  They are customized to fit precisely in the room which doesn’t occur with standard cabinetry; plus, they last longer and retain their value.  For this project, we chose a gorgeous marble to accent the custom kitchen island and a neutral color palette to complement it.  The final touches included all new stainless steel kitchen appliances, hardware, and accent lighting.

Bathroom Renovation & Remodeling

Bathroom Renovation & Remodeling

I am excited to share this bathroom with you because it is the bathroom of MY dreams… welcome to my master bathroom.  When designing my bathroom, I wanted to create a space that felt bright, open, and, most importantly, clean. Therefore, I decided to opt for a simplistic and neutral color scheme, which would also help me create a sense of luxury in my bathroom. To kickstart this color scheme and design, I opted for patterned marble flooring from Marble Systems. Here, the mix of grey and white is nicely complemented by a snow-white border and marble baseboard – giving the space a distinctive, luxury feel. Since I chose statement flooring, I went for simple walls.  I designed my own custom vanity so that I could have the exact storage space that I needed and my shower giving it a rainfall showerhead, a main showerhead, and another handheld unit.  The last must-have for me was a large tub… what’s the use in your dream bathroom without a large tub to relax and enjoy it in?!
